Carpet beetles can be difficult to eliminate because the main problem is usually not the adult beetle — it is the larvae. Carpet beetle larvae feed on natural fibres and organic debris such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, pet hair, lint, dead insects, and other materials that can collect in carpets, closets, furniture, storage areas, and hidden spaces.

2. Space Heat Treatment

The best treatment method depends on where the activity is found, how widespread the infestation is, what materials are affected, and whether the source of the infestation can be located and removed.

Chemical Treatment for Carpet Beetles

Chemical treatment is another effective option for carpet beetle control. This method targets areas where carpet beetle larvae are likely to hide, feed, and travel, such as baseboards, carpet edges, cracks, crevices, closets, rugs, furniture edges, and storage areas.

Chemical treatment usually requires more preparation than heat treatment because the treatment must reach the areas where larvae and eggs may be present. Customers may need to vacuum thoroughly, move items away from baseboards, launder affected fabrics, reduce clutter, and remove or clean infested materials.

Chemical treatment may also require more than one application. Depending on the severity of the infestation and the carpet beetle life cycle, multiple treatments over a 4–6 week period may be recommended to fully eliminate the issue.

Space Heat Treatment for Carpet Beetles

Space heat treatment is often the fastest way to eliminate carpet beetles when the infestation is spread through a room or property. This method uses specialized heating equipment to raise the temperature in the treatment area to levels that are lethal to carpet beetles and their life stages.

Heat can kill both active carpet beetles and eggs when the correct temperature is reached for the required amount of time. It can also reach many areas where carpet beetles may be hiding, including carpets, furniture, baseboards, cracks, closets, and other harbourage areas.

Space heat treatment may be recommended when:

• Faster results are preferred
• Activity is found in multiple areas
• The customer wants to reduce chemical use
• The infestation is more widespread
• Carpet beetles may be hidden in furniture, rugs, or belongings
• Less preparation is preferred compared to chemical treatment

Although heat treatment generally requires less preparation than chemical treatment, some preparation is still required. Heat-sensitive items may need to be removed or protected, and cluttered areas may need to be adjusted so heat can circulate properly.
