Technica Weevil Solutions

Weevils are stored-product pests that commonly infest whole grains and dry pantry goods such as rice, wheat, corn, barley, oats, bird seed, pet food, seeds, beans, and other grain-based products. The most common stored-food weevils include rice weevils, granary weevils, and maize weevils. These pests are usually introduced into a home or business through an already infested product, and they can spread if contaminated products are left in storage. Rice and granary weevils are known to attack a variety of grain and grain products.

Weevil infestations are different from many other pantry pests because the larvae often develop inside the grain kernel. That means the problem may not be obvious until adult weevils emerge and are seen crawling around cupboards, shelves, storage bins, or food storage rooms. Because the developing insects can be hidden inside the product, surface spraying alone will not eliminate the infestation if contaminated food remains in place. Iowa State Extension notes that control requires locating and eliminating the infested whole grain.

At Technica Pest Solutions, our weevil control service focuses on identifying the infested product, checking nearby stored goods, and treating the areas where adult weevils may be hiding after the affected product has been removed. Our technician may inspect pantries, cupboards, dry storage rooms, bulk food containers, pet food storage, bird seed, grain bins, shelving, cracks and crevices, baseboard edges, floor-wall junctions, and areas where spilled grain or food dust may collect. This service is suitable for both homes and businesses, including restaurants, grocery storage areas, warehouses, rental properties, bakeries, cafes, and commercial food storage rooms.

After the affected products are removed, the storage area should be thoroughly cleaned. Vacuuming cracks, shelf seams, cabinet corners, floor edges, and food storage areas helps remove adult weevils, spilled grain, dust, and debris that may support continued activity. Illinois Extension recommends keeping food storage areas clean, removing old unused products, inspecting remaining food, and cleaning cracks and corners.

Where appropriate, Technica Pest Solutions can apply a targeted crack-and-crevice treatment to non-food-contact areas where adult weevils may be hiding. Treatment may be applied to cabinet seams, shelf cracks, baseboards, storage room cracks, and floor-wall junctions. Products are not applied directly to food, dishes, utensils, open packages, or food-contact surfaces. This is important because insecticides have limited value if insects are inside food packages, and household pesticides should not be used in food storage areas where contamination may occur.

To help prevent future weevil problems, dry goods should be stored in sealed glass, metal, or heavy plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. This prevents pests from entering clean products and can also contain activity if a product is already infested. Regularly inspecting older grain products, rotating stock, cleaning up spills, and avoiding long-term storage of forgotten dry goods can greatly reduce the chance of reinfestation. Illinois Extension recommends tightly closed glass, metal, or heavy plastic containers for stored foods.

Our weevil service is designed to protect food storage areas by identifying contaminated products, removing the conditions that allow activity to continue, cleaning and treating harbourage areas where appropriate, and giving homeowners or businesses practical prevention steps. For weevils, the most effective solution is a combination of inspection, product removal, sanitation, targeted treatment, and proper food storage.
