Technica Grain Beetle Solutions

Grain beetles are a common stored-product pest that can infest dry food products such as cereal, flour, rice, pasta, oats, spices, pet food, bird seed, nuts, dried fruit, baking mixes, and other pantry items. They are often found in kitchens, pantries, food storage areas, restaurants, grocery storage rooms, warehouses, and commercial facilities where dry food products are stored. Grain beetles are usually introduced through an already infested food product, and once inside, they can spread to other nearby items if the source is not found and removed. Sawtoothed and merchant grain beetles are two common species associated with stored food products.

At Technica Pest Solutions, our grain beetle control service focuses on identifying the source of the infestation, removing or isolating contaminated products, and treating the areas where beetles may be hiding. Grain beetle control is different from many other pest treatments because spraying alone will not solve the issue if infested food remains in the property. The most important step is locating the affected product, checking nearby dry goods, and removing the materials that are supporting the infestation. Extension sources specifically note that sanitation, inspection, and disposal of infested products are key parts of sawtoothed and merchant grain beetle control.

Our technician will inspect common source areas such as pantry shelves, cupboards, food storage rooms, dry goods, pet food, bulk food containers, spilled grain, cracks and crevices, shelving, baseboards, and areas where food debris may collect. In commercial settings, inspection may include storage racks, receiving areas, food prep areas, dry storage rooms, floor-wall junctions, equipment edges, and areas where product spills or packaging damage may occur.

Once the source is identified, infested products should be discarded or handled properly. In some cases, small quantities of affected dry goods may be heat treated or frozen to kill all life stages, but in most situations, disposal is the most practical option.

After the source has been removed, thorough vacuuming and cleaning are important. Grain beetles can hide in cracks, shelf edges, corners, spilled food debris, and packaging seams. Removing crumbs, grain dust, old food residue, and contaminated material helps prevent the infestation from continuing. Vacuum contents should be removed from the property after cleaning to avoid reintroducing insects back into the space.

Where appropriate, Technica Pest Solutions can apply a targeted crack-and-crevice treatment to areas where grain beetles may be hiding. This may include shelf cracks, cabinet seams, baseboard edges, floor-wall junctions, storage room cracks, and other non-food-contact areas. Insecticide should not be applied directly to food, food-contact surfaces, dishes, or open food products. If treatment is required, food and dishes should be removed or protected before service, and the area should only be used again once it is safe according to the product label and technician instructions. Orkin Canada similarly notes that insecticides should not be used around food products, but crack-and-crevice treatment where insects live may help as part of a broader control plan.

For prevention, dry food products should be stored in sealed containers made of glass, hard plastic, or metal with tight-fitting lids. Paper bags, cardboard boxes, and thin plastic packaging are easier for stored-product pests to infest or spread through. Regularly checking older food items, cleaning pantry shelves, rotating stock, removing spilled food, and avoiding long-term storage of forgotten dry goods can greatly reduce the chance of future grain beetle problems.

Our goal is to eliminate the infestation at the source, treat harbourage areas where appropriate, and provide clear recommendations to prevent reinfestation. For homes, restaurants, rental units, warehouses, and commercial food storage areas, a proper grain beetle control program should always include inspection, source removal, sanitation, targeted treatment, and prevention.
