Heat Treatment for Bed Bugs and Other Insects

We raise the temperature of the whole space to a level insects cannot survive, reaching into furniture, cracks and wall voids. Add a residual spray if you like, or choose heat only. Serving Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and surrounding communities.

How it works

What is heat treatment?

Heat treatment kills insects by raising the temperature of a room or a whole home above what they can survive. Professional heaters bring the space to 50 to 60 degrees C, and fans keep the hot air moving. That moving air carries heat into mattresses, furniture, carpets, wall voids and cracks.

Time matters as well as temperature. US EPA guidance says bed bugs and their eggs die when held at 49 degrees C or more for 90 minutes. We raise the heat in a controlled way and check temperatures in several spots to confirm lethal levels are held, not just reached for a moment.

The heat does not disappear the moment the heaters are switched off. The space cools gradually, so furniture and walls stay hot for a while longer. If you are comfortable with it, we can also apply a residual spray that keeps working after the space is back to normal. If you prefer no chemicals, we treat with heat alone.

What we treat with heat

Pests we treat with heat

Heat works well for bed bugs, fleas and carpet beetles, and it can be used for other indoor insects too. We also rent heaters for small jobs. Your technician will tell you what suits your situation.

Bed bugs

Heat reaches into mattresses, furniture, wall voids and cracks. It can kill eggs, nymphs and adults in one visit.

Our specialty

Carpet beetles

Heat reaches larvae and eggs in carpets, closets, baseboards and furniture. Prep is usually lighter than for a chemical treatment.

Heat or chemical

Fleas

Heat treats the whole space, including carpets, furniture, bedding areas and cracks. Your pets still need a flea product from your vet.

Heater rental

Rent professional heaters to treat a small, contained area yourself, such as one bedroom, for bed bugs or other insects. Rental is available across our service area, and our team explains the fees when you ask for a quote.

Why heat

Why we take pride in heat treatment

Heat is our specialty for bed bugs, and we use it for fleas, carpet beetles and other insects too. Here is why it works, and where it has limits.

Reaches hidden spots

Moving hot air gets into mattresses, furniture, cracks and wall voids that are hard to reach with a spray. Some spots, like wall voids and floor edges, heat more slowly, so we check temperatures in several places.

Eggs as well as adults

When lethal heat is held long enough, it kills eggs as well as larvae, nymphs and adults.

Heat alone, or with a spray

The space cools slowly after the heaters are off, so the heat keeps working for a while. You can add a residual spray for longer protection, or choose heat only if you prefer no chemicals.

Controlled and monitored

The heat is raised gradually, and temperatures are checked in several spots to confirm lethal levels are held.

Prep takes some work

Heat-sensitive items must be removed or protected before treatment day. We give you a checklist so nothing is missed.

Not right for every building

In some multi-unit buildings heat is not practical. There, a chemical treatment is often the better fit.
What to expect

How a heat treatment works

Assessment

A licensed technician confirms the pest, checks how far it has spread and looks at the space. We recommend the right treatment, and our team explains all fees in your quote.

Your prep checklist

You get a written checklist for your home. It covers what to remove, what to protect and how to clear clutter so heat can circulate.

Treatment day

Everyone, including pets, leaves the space. We set up heaters, fans and sensors, raise the heat gradually and monitor temperatures in several spots. If you have chosen the optional residual spray, we apply it during the visit.

Cool down and return

Once lethal levels have been held, the space cools gradually and any spray is left to dry. Your technician does a final check and lets you know when you can go back in.

Review and follow-up

We review the results and talk through next steps, including a follow-up visit if one is needed.
Getting ready

How to prepare for heat treatment

Good prep protects your belongings and helps heat reach every hiding spot. Here is what most homes need to do.

Remove items that can melt, warp or spoil

Take out candles, crayons, lipstick and other cosmetics, vinyl records and medications.

Remove anything that can burst or burn

Take out aerosol cans, lighters, fire extinguishers, propane or oxygen tanks, and other pressurized or flammable products.

Plan for plants and pets

Houseplants and all pets must be out of the space. Ask us about aquariums and animals that are hard to move.

Check your electronics

Some electronics need to be unplugged, protected or removed. Your technician tells you which ones.

Loosen clutter

Clear floors and loosen packed closets, drawers and boxes so hot air can move through them. Do not move items to another room without asking us first.

Point out special items

Tell us about fire sprinklers, heat detectors or a monitored alarm system. Also point out heirlooms, photographs, artwork or musical instruments so we can plan around them.

Our office sends a full prep checklist before your visit, matched to your pest and your home.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is heat treatment safe for my home and belongings?

For most homes, yes, when trained technicians do it and the prep list is followed. The heat is raised gradually and held at a level most buildings and furniture handle without harm, and temperatures are checked in several spots. Items that can melt, warp or burst are removed or protected first.

Do people and pets need to leave during treatment?

Yes. Everyone, including all pets, must be out of the space while it is heated and while any spray is applied. You can return once the space has cooled, any spray has dried and your technician says it is ready.

How long will I be out of my home?

Plan to be away until the next day. Heat takes several hours to build, hold and cool, and larger or cluttered spaces take longer. Your technician does a final check and lets you know when you can go back in.

Do you use a chemical treatment as well as heat?

Only if you want it. Heat reaches deep into furniture and cracks, and for bed bugs it can kill eggs, nymphs and adults in one visit. If you are comfortable with chemicals, we can add a residual spray that keeps working once the space is back to normal. If you prefer no chemicals, we use heat alone. In some multi-unit buildings where heat is not practical, a chemical treatment on its own is the better fit.

Can I rent heat equipment and do it myself?

Yes, for bed bugs and other insects in a small, contained area such as one bedroom. Rental is available across our service area, and our team explains the fees when you ask for a quote. We arrange pickup or delivery and explain setup, running and monitoring. Cycles take several hours. The heaters and the space get very hot, so follow our instructions closely. For a larger or spreading problem, call us to talk through a full treatment.
