Fleas

Fleas are small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of animals and humans. Known for their jumping ability and rapid reproduction, fleas can quickly infest homes and become difficult to eliminate without professional help.

Identification

  • Size: 1–3 mm long

  • Color: Dark brown to reddish-brown

  • Shape: Flattened body with long hind legs for jumping

  • Features: Wingless, with piercing mouthparts for feeding on blood

Where Fleas Are Found

Fleas thrive in areas where pets or wildlife are present. They hide in:

  • Pet bedding, carpets, and upholstery

  • Cracks and crevices in floors and baseboards

  • Yards, especially shaded, moist areas where animals rest

  • Wildlife nests, such as raccoons, squirrels, or rodents near the property

Why Fleas Are a Problem

  • Bites: Cause itching, redness, and irritation on both people and pets

  • Allergic Reactions: Some animals and humans develop flea allergy dermatitis

  • Disease Transmission: Fleas can carry tapeworms and bacterial infections

  • Rapid Reproduction: A single female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, leading to infestations within weeks

Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively

  • Flea dirt (tiny black specks that resemble pepper) on pet fur, carpets, or bedding

  • Visible adult fleas jumping on carpets, upholstery, or pets

  • Red, itchy bites on ankles, legs, or other exposed skin

  • Pale gums in pets from anemia in severe infestations

Prevention Tips

  • Bathe and groom pets regularly, using veterinarian-recommended flea control products

  • Wash pet bedding and blankets frequently in hot water

  • Vacuum carpets, rugs, and furniture often, disposing of vacuum bags immediately

  • Keep lawns trimmed and reduce shaded, moist areas that attract wildlife

  • Seal entry points to prevent rodents or other flea-carrying animals from entering structures

Frequently Asked Questions

We apply targeted residual sprays to carpets, floors, and pet resting areas, along with insect growth regulators to break the flea life cycle. Multiple treatments may be required, and we provide preparation guidelines to help ensure complete control.

Yes. All of our treatments are designed with safety in mind. We use products that are approved by Health Canada and apply them in targeted areas where pests live and travel, not where your family spends time. When needed, we may recommend keeping pets and children out of treated areas until products have dried—usually just a short time. Our goal is to eliminate pests effectively while keeping your home safe for your loved ones.

Preparation requirements depend on the type of treatment being performed. If preparation is needed, we will provide you with a detailed prep sheet and walk you through the steps to ensure everything is clear before the service.

It’s normal to see some activity for a short period after treatment, as pests come into contact with the products and move out of their hiding places. This typically decreases within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the pest type. If you continue to notice significant activity after the expected timeframe, we’ll work with you to reassess and, if needed, provide follow-up service under your warranty.
